Road Trip Darts

When I graduated from high school my friends and I wanted to experience a road trip. Our parents had given their blessing to a long weekend if we stayed within the state. My three girlfriends and I were so excited, we had never had this kind of freedom before. The only problem was we didn’t know where to go until someone came up with an idea to use the dartboard in Shelly’s basement to help us decide on our destination. We picked straws to see who would throw the dart. It was Heidi. We fashioned a blindfold, gave her a dart and stood her in front of the Wisconsin map. She threw the dart and it landed somewhere near Superior, WI. We had our destination. We spent a long weekend checking out the local scenery, watching the ships come in, and even venturing over to Duluth, MN. We had so much fun on our little adventure that we played the same game of roadtrip darts every summer during college. We eventually expanded our horizons outside the state and invested in a United States map. Our Road trip darts led us to Colorado, North Carolina and New York.

It had been 13 years since my last trip and I even kind of forgot about Road trip Darts until two years ago when my husband and I were planning a vacation. We couldn’t agree on a location. That’s when it hit me... Road trip Darts! He liked the idea of being spontaneous and we both agreed to let our trip be the result of one single dart throw at a United States map that I printed off the Internet. I got to throw the dart. It hit South Dakota. We had a great trip. We saw the Badlands, the Black Hills, the Corn Palace and Mount Rushmore. We even stopped to get our bumper sticker in Wall Drug.

While we haven’t played the game since, we’re planning another mystery trip next summer. This time my husband Dan gets to throw the dart that decides our next vacation destination.
